with the greatest pleasure that the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra welcomes
back Alexandra Jakeman to the stage of the Kings Lynn Corn Exchange.
Alex, as she is affectionately known, joined the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra
as one of its youngest members and soon became principal flute. She left
a lasting impression not just for her accomplished playing but equally
for her warm personality. Alex attended Chetham's School of Music, in
Manchester, from the age of eleven where she was taught by Gitte Sorensen.
She was a member of the National Youth Orchestra from 1998-2001, becoming
principal in her final year. During her time in the NYO, Alex performed
in venues such as the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Barbican and the Royal
Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms with conductors such as Mark Elder,
Sir Andrew Davis and Yan Pascal Tortelier. Alex's
concerto performances include Bernstein's Halil with the Chetham's Symphony
Orchestra, Mozart's G major Flute Concerto and Bach's B minor Suite with
the Anglia Concertante and The Carnival of Venice with the Norfolk Symphony
Orchestra in a King's Lynn Promenade Concert. In 2001 Alex performed Malcolm
Arnold's Flute Concerto No 1 in the presence of the composer as part of
his eightieth birthday celebrations. Alex now attends the Royal Academy
of Music in London where she studies with Michael Cox. She takes part
in various ensembles and has played in both the Academy Concert Orchestra
and Symphony Orchestra. In February 2006 she performed the Ibert Flute
Concerto with the Concert Orchestra. She regularly performs with her wind
quintet, The Buxton Ensemble. |
