| Dr John A Smith | ||
| Dr Smith was one of
the founder members of the NSO, and its first Chairman, in 1970. His
funeral was held on Friday 2nd December 2011 at St Mary's Church, Gt
Massingham. Rob Slocombe remembers him well, and writes:
"What a great character! Multi-instrumentalist and raconteur. I met him whilst working in Litcham in August 1990, and soon found myself together with him playing trombone in his oom-pah band. Thereafter we kept meeting up at all kinds of classical and wind band performances, John usually playing bassoon, but one never could predict whether he would suddenly demonstrate proficiency on a different instrument. I believe he had onetime been a violist. He told me a couple of years ago that he had steadfastly refused to undergo heart surgery, and he defiantly remained a smoker. Here was a man who lived Life to the full, and had no fear of Death. So great to have known him."
