The NSO has appointed a new Music Director. Alexander Walker has agreed to become the Music Director of the NSO commencing in the Autumn of 2008. The orchestra is confident that his appointment will be of the utmost benefit from an overall artistic and musical standpoint. Alexander Walker appeared at the Friends' Concert in January 2008 to conduct Schumann's Fourth Symphony.

Alexander Walker will take over from James Stobart in September 2008. Alexander Walker is in demand as a conductor throughout the UK and abroad. His work has taken him to Finland, Poland, Russia, the Far East, USA, the Balkans and the former Soviet Union. This season's highlights have included concerts with the North Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic, the Macedonian National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chelsea Opera Group.

Engagements for the coming year include a concert with Prague Philharmonia in the Dvorak Hall of the Rudolfinum (conducting the music of Dvorak) as well as several return visits to conduct the Russian (formerly USSR) State Symphony Orchestra in Moscow. He works regularly at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and conducted performances of the Nutcracker last Christmas.

He has toured three times with the Royal Ballet to the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres in Russia, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and to the Far East.

Music Director

James Stobart has recently announced his resignation as Music Director. Here is what was said in the programme for the November 2006 concert: "After some eighty concerts and three hundred and twenty-five rehearsals, Jim has decided to relinquish his position in March 2008 to coincide with his seventieth birthday. There will be much more written on this in the future but, as he says, "I have 6 concerts remaining in which to achieve even greater heights for the NSO". However, Jim has decided to see out the whole season and his last concerts will be at Gedney Church and the Corn Exchange next May.

Saint-Saens Organ

Organist John Lyon is building an organ which will be used for the Saint-Saens Third Symphony at the King's Lynn Corn Exchange in May 2008. John reports that work is progressing well, "I have got quite a lot done this summer. The digital modules are in and wired together. They are almost ready for testing. The stop switches need to be wired to the module boards and a swell pedal fitted. The pedalboard now needs the contact rail to be fitted into position. Should the tests prove successful, the organ case will need to be finished and varnished and then it will be ready to go!"
